Castlebar Library is a two-storey purpose built library, built in 1990. The library area was extended and the County Library Headquarters added in 2007. The lending library is located on the ground floor and local studies department and exhibition area are located on the 1st floor of the original building. The extension has a total floor size of(900m²) and houses the Library HQ, lecture room, exhibition space and computer room.
The library's patent glazed window wall with entrance door, opens onto a raised paved area and courtyard. Distinctive colour scheme to demarcate the different functions of the library.There are exhibition areas in the lobby and at mezzanine level. Extensive areas of patent glazing and roof-lighting help maximise day-lighting.

The library houses 3 sculptures: 'Mobile Glass Art' by Maud Cotter; 'Chisel Jazz' created by a cross-cultural project involving Michael Anders from Germany, Ronnie Graham from Galway and George Osborne from Belfast; and a sculpture of Micheal O'Malley by Marion O'Donnell. HQ extension to open in the early summer of 2007. |
